Littleton is a city located in the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2005, the city is estimated to have a total population of 40,396. It is the county seat of Arapahoe CountyGR6. Portions of the city are also in Jefferson County and Douglas County. Littleton became widely known in 1999 when the Columbine High School massacre occurred at nearby Columbine High School, which the media reported as being located in the city. The school is actually in unincorporated Jefferson County and is closer to Denver, but is in a ZIP code associated with Littleton. The school is one of the schools of the Jefferson County school system and not one of the Littleton Public Schools.
